I saw R.E.M. in 2003 at the Air Canada Centre and was prepared for some lame opener (saw U2 in 1997ish and Third Eye Blind opened) so didn’t even check to see who it was. The music ushering us to our seats sounded super familiar, so I asked the couple in front who it was…
“Uhh, Sprinkle Pony?”.
Despite terrible stadium acoustics, Sparklehorse was the best music I heard that year. I had been following them since Little Fat Baby had made it onto a mix tape from one of my sad bastard music loving friends, but never thought of seeing them live – they were more of a headphones band.
Sad that the music world has lost Mark Linkous, a prodigiously gifted purveyor of cracked, desolate Americana. He will be missed.
